Information About Ionian & Kythira Islands Region
The Ionian Islands comprise of 7 large islands and are therefore also known as Eptanisa (Seven islands). They are all in the Ionian Sea apart from the island of Kythira located south of Peloponnesus. Visitors are always fascinated by the fairytale-like villages, the rich culture, the many historical monuments and of course the beautiful beaches with the white sand and clear blue waters.
All islands are equally popular tourist destinations and can please any kind of visitor.
Kythira, also known with its old Venetian name Cerigo, is the islands of the goddess Afrodite the god Erota (Cupid). It is located between Crete and south Peloponnesus of the Elafonissos coast and cape Malia. The island connects by ferry to Kalamata, Gythio and Neapolis.
It also has an airport with Olympic Airways flights to Athens all year round. The airport is approx 8km from the main town.
