Information About Etoloakarnania Museums
The museum is located near the Public Park of the city and contains findings from pre-historic times to the Roman era, from the area of Agrinio and the ancient city as well as the entire prefecture.
The building was erected in 1960 by donation of the Papastratos brothers.
The museum is situated in a two-story neoclassic building dating 1931. The museum’s collection includes authentic paintings and scene replicas of the heroic Exodus of Mesolonghi, portraits of philhellenes and of Greek chieftains, authentic engravings of the english Friedel dating 1837, guns dating back to 1826, coins and medals, plaster busts of the five prime ministers of Messolonghi.
Also exhibited are personal items and manuscripts of Lord Byron, along with paintings of his two journeys to Greece and the bust of his marble statue which is located in Cambridge.
It includes headstones and other findings mainly from the burialground of ancient Thyrreio and Anaktorion but also from the wider region of todays Vonitsa. The building was erected in 1962.
The greatest exhibits of the museum is the marble relief that pictures a sitting figure, an Attic piece dating to the second half of the 4th century BC. Also the upper part of a column that bares an inscription of the alliance between Thyrreions and Romans in 94 BC.
